JOHOR BAHRU, 19 February:  Universiti Teknologi Malaysia stands tall at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2012 at PWTC when it won 23 gold, 22 silver and three bronze medals, which ended yesterday.

The achievement made UTM the institution with the most gold medals followed by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) eight and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) six gold medals.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang said, UTM researchers also won the Best of the Best Award, The Best Award and Best Biotechnology Award awarded by the Japan Intellectual Property Association.

The Best of the Best Award was won by Professor Dr. Wan Azlee Abu Bakar through his product Euro IV DesCat Production Technology, a device that offers many advantages which a recyclable, cost effective operational process and treated diesel which meet green environmental requirement.

DesCat can achieve up to Euro IV standard for crude diesel fuel and Green Diesel for Malaysian commercial diesel duel according to International Standard Diesel Fuel.

“This achievement made UTM as Best of the Best award recipients for fourth time in five years.

“Meanwhile, The Best Award was won by Dr. Faizah Abd Ghani from Faculty of Education. She produced a product called Discovery System: Discover Your True Self,” he said.

The product is a new design to discover the nafs of people based on Imam al-Ghazali’s perspective which included Ammarah, Lawwamah, Mulhimah, Mutmainnah and Rodhiah.

The product is unique and was developed to provide an alternative approach for discovery of self through Nafs Discovery and it has been designed with an interactive web based self improvement inventory with expert consultation.

“Another UTM researcher Professor Dr. Sheikh Hussein Shaikh Salleh from the Faculty of Health Science and Biomedical Engineering won the Best Biotechnology Award,” said Dr. Zaini.

His product Smart ABR System was developed to detect hearing loss in five minutes compared to conventional method which took 30 minutes.

Dr. Zaini cited, at MTE 2012 UTM submitted 48 innovation and research products to participate in 24 categories.

“A total of 558 innovation and research products from universities and research institutions in the country and abroad were contested in order to take 95 gold, 156 silver and 194 bronze medals.

“Among the countries participating in the expo were South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Crotia and Nigeria”.
